Arnot and Morton Arrive at South Col
Posted on May 22, 2010

Hey there, it’s Dave and Melissa calling in from the South Col. It’s about 8,000 meters, and it’s 7:30 at night. We arrived a little bit late this afternoon, had a little bit of dinner, and now we’re getting ready to rest for a few of hours before starting to climb. Today was a fairly long day. I really wasn’t feeling very good and have decided to climb with supplemental oxygen tonight. We’re going to plan on leaving here about 12:30 and aim for the summit sometime right after sunrise. We’ll check in again along the way.

Thanks for all the support, and we’ll check in hopefully from the summit.

Hey Melissa, what matters is to try for your dream. You have the guts to do just that and so few people do. Big respect to you. Have a safe summit push and come down safe.

  2. Shelley

    Stay safe, Melissa!

    Dave and Melissa,

There are many of us watching tonight. We know you will do your best with your best decision-making involved. What an amazing experience you have already had, and now you may look again at the world below, wondering about this human race down there and how we all must work together for the good of us all.

    Love from Harriett

Sorry to hear you were not feeling well enough to make it the rest of the way w/o supplemental oxygen. Don’t give it a second thought though, as the most important thing is to get back safely. Remember to strike a cool pose at the top of the world, Melissa! T-Dawg and Eddie Bauer, at Rapid City, SD figure you ROCK!!!

Melissa, you are an inspiration to so many of us. Climbing this weekend and spending the night in a snow cave, I couldn’t help but think about you, Morton, Hahn, and Leif so far away on Everest! Godspeed to all of you and know that our thoughts and prayers are with each of you for you success and safe return!
