Remembering Chhewang Nima Sherpa

As many of you have now heard, First Ascent Guide Melissa Arnot was climbing Mount Baruntse in Nepal with her dear friend Chhewang Nima Sherpa over the past weekend when he was killed by a collapsing ice serac and avalanche. Melissa was unhurt and was able to descend the mountain. According to Melissa, Chhewang, who had summited Everest 19 times, was highly revered in the Sherpa community, mostly because of his humble attitude and kind approach towards all people.

Chhewang was the sole supporter of his wife and two children, as well as eight brothers and sisters whom he helped to support. Eddie Bauer is supporting Chhewang’s family by donating to a checking account set up by Alpine Ascents International, the guiding company he worked closely with in the States, and encourages all who can to do the same.
