With Eddie Bauer’s official return to fishing this month, we’ve decided to provide a little more background on the three fishing guides who dialed in the product development of the new Sport Shop fishing line. The third in our series is Eddie Bauer guide and New York State native, Michael Pepi.—LYA Editor
Sport Shop Guide Michael Pepi grew up in upstate New York, where he began fishing off a dock with his father when he was only 3 years old. By the time he was 13, he was tying his own flies, and in high school, he started guiding.
As an English and Environmental Conservation major in college, Michael examined how the amount of people on a river affects both wild steelhead and hatcheries. What he learned continues to inform his career as a guide. It’s also shaped his love of fly fishing: “It’s more technical, and I feel like you’re more attuned with the river, with nature.”
Michael was drawn to the Sport Shop Guide Team by the guide-built process. He loves testing products, putting them through the grinder of all kinds of environments and weather. “I’m excited about it all, because in different regions you need different equipment,” he says. “But I’m super-pumped for the wading jacket to go steelheading. It’s going to be great.”
