We’re big fans—and the official apparel sponsor—of the GoPro® Mountain Games, which kicks off tomorrow in Vail, Colorado. Billed as the country’s largest celebration of athletes, art, music and mountains, the event is part party, part festival and part mountain athlete competition. From June 5th to the 8th, professional and amateur outdoor adventure athletes from the Vail Valley and around the world will converge upon the mountains and rivers of Vail to compete in nine sports and 25 disciplines including x-country, slopestyle and road cycling, freestyle, 8-Ball, sprint and extreme kayaking, raft cross, World Cup Bouldering, stand up paddle sprint and surf cross, as well as trail, mud and road running, Dock Dogs events and the Ultimate Mountain Challenge.
Eddie Bauer will once again attending in full force at Mountain Games, with our Airstream parked on the plaza, a strong showing of Eddie Bauer Colorado folks handing out free stuff and , the zip-line humming and our guide and athlete team competing in the weekend events. Last year, our top five favorite events included the Steep Creek Championships, the Slackline Comp, the Bouldering World Cup, the Whitewater SUP and the Kayak 8-Ball madness. With so much action, we missed more than a few events but caught the Dock Dogs Big Air, checked out the vendor area and wrapped up the weekend by watching team Eddie Bauer/First Ascent coast with eighties throwback rocker style in the Badass Dash.
June is a spectacular time to chill in Vail and in addition to the athletic events and vendor fair, the GoPro Mountain Games will include a mountain photography competition, adventure film school, film festival, an interactive exhibition and demo area, live music, and mountain lifestyle parties. We caught a few sets of the shows last year from the balcony, checked out the premiere of Walled In and, as a result, moved a little slowly the next morning. This year the big news is that Jimmy Chin is judging the photography contest. Like the events, there is almost too much radness to take in, but for those headed to Vail for the celebration, it’s a worthy mission. So go get on the road, we hope to see you getting after it in Vail. —LYA Editor
