Drew Tabke earns a third place finish in Haines, AK.

Eddie Bauer freeskier and two-time world champ Drew Tabke earned a third-place podium finish in the Freeride World Tour stop in the legendary venue of Haines, Alaska yesterday. On one of the world’s biggest freeride venues Tabke earned his spot with a massive backflip in the middle of an impressive run, taking home his first podium of the 2016 season in a tough field of 14 of the world’s best freeskiers who made the cut after the first three competitions of the World Tour season in Andorra, Austria and Chamonix, France.

Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the live stream of the contest was unavailable but the successful event in Haines went off in the beautiful Chilkat mountains for a second consecutive year with near-perfect snow on beautiful spines and a genuine Alaskan ambiance. Finding a spot on the podium has proved elusive for Tabke this season but his typical innovative line selection and massive backflip secured his third place finish in a the only venue in his home country this season on the tour. The home court advantage added an extra charge for Tabke, who has been training as an Alaskan heli guide in a few brief breaks between tour stops this season.

As the world’s best freeriders know, everything is bigger in Alaska, including Tabke’s result from the penultimate stop on this year’s tour. The podium finish for Tabke qualifies him for the Freeride World Tour Finals at the Xtreme Verbier in Switzerland next week, giving him an outside chance to still secure a third world tour overall title on the legendary Bec des Rosses venue. Check out the replay of the ski competition in Haines, including Tabke’s impressive run, below.

Thirty-one of the world’s best riders  made the long journey from Fieberbrunn, Austria to the mountains of Southeast Alaska to compete on the fourth stop of the 2016 Swatch Freeride World Tour. The riders were composed of an elite selection of riders qualifying after the first round of cuts in the Austria last week. After several days of waiting through inclement weather, the riders were finally able to catch a first glimpse of the face this morning when they were heli-ported to the remote venue over 30 miles from Haines.

The ENE-facing competition slope in Haines is known simply as “The Venue” and is over 1800 vertical feet of pure Alaskan spines, airs, and aesthetically-featured powder fields. The venue is accessed only by helicopter, adding to the remote and isolated nature of this prestigious event. This year, the face was blanketed in an above-average snowpack giving riders confidence to send big lines.

After nearly a week of waiting though low clouds, light snow, and poor visibility, riders were treated to blue skies and a good visibility for the first time this morning. The weather conditions allowed the snow to adhere to the steep spines of the competition face making for picture-perfect riding conditions in consistent, velvety Alaskan powder.

The Haines event is always one of the most anticipated events on the FWT because the Alaskan mountains offer some of the highest quality freeriding in the world. The March competition was a fine example of how the top riders on the planet can take advantage of these fabled mountains to raise the level of the sport and produce a competition of the highest caliber.
